Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, who frown,

And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,

Tell that its sculptor well those passions read

Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,

The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed;

And on the pedestal these words appear:

“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:

Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!”

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay

Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare

The lone and level sands stretch far away.

奧西曼德斯

雪萊 1818 26歲

我遇見一位來自古國的旅客

他說：有兩隻斷落的巨大石腿

站在沙漠中。附近沙裡

還半埋著，一塊受損皺眉的臉，

及那癟唇，與冷酷統治中的輕蔑，

說明這雕刻家很明白那激情

至今仍存，刻印在這無生命之物上，

那仿傚的手與依歸的心；

而石座上有這樣的字眼：

“我名叫奧西曼德斯，眾王之王：

看看我的功蹟，強人們，誰能與我相提！”

沒有東西保留，環繞盡是衰微

巨大的破敗，無邊無際的空虛

沒有人煙與遙遠延伸的沙層。

英國偉大浪漫派詩人，雪萊的知名十四行詩，4433式分節，假托埃及法老拉美西斯二世，也就是奧西曼德斯的破敗雕像來講道理。

就算曾經建立一時顯赫的功業，留下宏偉的雕像紀念，那又如何？幾千年過去，現在雕像不過是受損的身體與臉，當年威震四方的功蹟 ，現在根本沒人記得，倒是妄尊自大的2句話，徒留後世人的笑柄與感慨。

雪萊道理講的很明白，也很淺白，把詩看完就懂了，沒什麼好多談，特別翻譯是因為“Watchmen 守護者”的主角之一，就是由這首詩取名（被台灣翻譯成奇奇怪怪的“智謀者”），而“奧西曼德斯”此詩，在守護者某章也出現為卷尾句。

Alan Moore 亞倫‧摩爾這樣安排是何居心？也許是在暗示，以偶像亞歷山大大帝為師的奧西曼德斯，雖是世界最聰明的人，也建立偉大（可怕）的功業，但隨時間過去，他的成就終將被遺忘，也很有可能，他努力拯救人類的志業終將失敗。

真悲傷……

注意雪萊描述奧西曼德斯的臉，“frown 皺眉”、“wrinkled lip 癟唇”、“sneer of cold command 冷酷統治中的輕蔑”，這些自傲統治者的特徵，在“Watchmen守護者”裡的現代奧西曼德斯身上，也通通找得到啊。
